Police Recover Remains from Giant Crocodile in Komati River

Gabriel Batista, a 59-year-old businessman, disappeared on April 27 when floodwaters swept his truck off a low-water bridge near Kruger National Park. After a week-long search, police targeted a 500-kilogram crocodile 60 meters from his empty vehicle and airlifted it for dissection, finding human remains including two arms, a rib cage fragment, chest tissue, and Batista’s ring—plus six unrelated pairs of shoes. Captain Johan Potgieter rappelled from a helicopter to secure the croc, earning praise for his courage, while DNA tests continue to confirm the identity amid warnings about the river’s deadly floods and predators.
