US President to Visit Cape Verde on Monday

US President Joe Biden will visit Cape Verde on Monday, stopping on the island of Sal during a trip to Angola, the archipelago’s government announced today.

Biden will be received by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva at Amílcar Cabral International Airport at 8:30 am (9:30 am in Lisbon), marking the first visit by a sitting US President to Cape Verde.

The United States hosts the largest Cape Verdean diaspora in the world, one of the reasons for the close relationship between the two countries, which are traditionally aligned.

According to the Cape Verdean government, Biden’s “historic visit” signals “Cape Verde’s growing credibility and influence on the world stage” as a “model of stability and democracy”.

The archipelago was one of the countries selected a year ago to have access to a new package of support from the US government development agency, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Cape Verde plans to present the projects to be financed, in an amount that is not yet known, within two years.
