Man Charged with School Shooting Threats Released Shortly Before School Year Begins in Charlotte

Drew Owens, 31, faces five felony counts for threats sent in February 2025 targeting Hawk Ridge Elementary, Community House Middle, Ardrey Kell High, West Charlotte High, and Garinger High. Arrested then, his bond was reduced to $75,000 in May, leading to his release from Mecklenburg County Jail on August 23. Though on electronic monitoring and barred from the schools, families worry about safety with students returning Tuesday, August 25. Owens’ father, an ROTC instructor at one targeted school, reported ongoing harassment, and neighbors live in fear.
