The Olympic Committee notes that it has used an Artificial Intelligence system to identify these cases and reveals the most serious ones.
The International Olympic Committee has announced that more than 8,500 virtual attacks and harassment postings against athletes and members of the Olympic delegations were identified during the Paris Olympic Games.
‘It is deeply worrying that we have also witnessed a significant volume of harassment, abuse and attacks, particularly online, directed at athletes and members of their entourages. Many athletes have been subjected to these attacks, despite having given their best on the field and fully respecting the rules of their events,’ reads the statement from the International Olympic Committee.
The Globe reports from the note released by the International Olympic Committee that the most serious cases involved Imane Khelif, from Algeria, who won a gold medal. Another case was Lin Yu-Ting, from Taiwan.
Both athletes have hyperandrogenism, a condition characterized by high levels of male hormones that are naturally produced by the body. As well as being the target of multiple fake news stories during the competition, they also became the target of several attacks and harassing posts.
These attacks were detected by a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) system implemented by the International Olympic Committee, with the body signaling its commitment to continuing to develop ways to combat online harassment.
