Czech gymnast Natalie Stichova, 23, died after falling from the Tegelberg mountain in the Bavarian region of southern Germany while trying to take a selfie. She fell from a height of 80 metres, according to the newspaper O Globo. Natalie was with two friends and her boyfriend, David, when the accident happened.
According to local media, a friend of the athlete, who preferred not to be identified, reported that one of Natalie’s legs seemed to slip off the edge while she was setting the scene for the photo near Neuschwanstein Castle, an important tourist spot in the region. It is not yet known whether the cause of the fall was the slip or whether a piece of rock broke off.
The fall took place on 15 August and, despite her serious injuries, Natalie survived and was transported by helicopter to hospital. However, due to irreversible brain damage, the family decided to remove the devices that were keeping her alive on the 21st.
The Sokol Pribram gymnastics club, where Natalie trained, expressed its deep sadness at the loss. In a statement, the club described Natalie as someone who ‘spread smiles throughout her short life’ and offered support to her family and friends. In honor of the gymnast, the club encouraged people to light a candle in Natalie’s memory.
