Warning Sirens in Tel Aviv After Hamas Fires 4 Rockets

Warning sirens sounded this morning in Tel Aviv after rockets were fired from Gaza, on the day that marks the first anniversary of Hamas’ attacks on Israel, the Israeli army announced.

The attack has already been claimed by the armed wing of the Islamist group Hamas, which said it attacked Israeli forces in different parts of Gaza to underline the resilience of the militants in the face of the Israeli offensive that has killed around 42,000 Palestinians and destroyed large areas of Gaza, displacing around 90% of its population.

According to the Israeli military, three of the rockets were intercepted and a fourth fell in an open area, causing no casualties or material damage.

The army added that it launched a series of artillery strikes and aerial bombardments in the early hours of today targeting Hamas launch sites and the Palestinian group’s underground militant infrastructure with a view to “thwarting an imminent attack”.

A year ago, Hamas-led militants breached Israel’s security barrier and stormed nearby military bases and farming communities in a surprise attack that killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and kidnapped another 250. Hamas is still holding nearly 100 of those hostages, a third of whom are believed dead. Israel is now at war with Hamas in Gaza and its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon, and has threatened to attack Iran in response to a ballistic missile attack on Israel last week.
