Messi’s ‘Recital’ Brings Argentina Closer to 2026 World Cup

The forward contributed three goals and two assists to the rout over Bolivia.

Argentina took another step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the early hours of Tuesday to Wednesday, defeating Bolivia by a resounding 6-0 at the Monumental de Núñez Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Fully recovered from the physical problems that have been ‘tormenting’ him, Lionel Messi was given a starting spot by Lionel Scaloni and contributed to this result with a real ‘recital’, as, in addition to scoring three goals, he also provided assists for two others, scored by Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez.

In the second half, the Albiceleste coach (who also included Nicolás Otamendi, from Benfica, in the starting eleven) took advantage of the comfortable advantage to bring on less-used players, including Thiago Almada, who sealed the final result.

All things considered, with this victory, Argentina now has 22 points after ten rounds, which leaves them in the lead of the South American qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup, with a three-point advantage over second-placed Colombia.

Bolivia, on the other hand, remains with 12 points, which leaves them, for now, in seventh place, which requires participation in a playoff to qualify for the competition.
