Ossufo Momade has been confirmed as the presidential candidate for RENAMO in the upcoming Mozambican elections, despite facing significant internal criticism and competition within the party. Momade, who took over RENAMO’s leadership after the death of Afonso Dhlakama in 2018, will be running for re-election at the party’s congress in mid-May (Voice of America) (Mozambique).
His leadership has been challenged by figures such as Venâncio Mondlane and Elias Dhlakama, who argue that the party needs reform and a more dynamic response to electoral fraud and internal issues. Critics within the party have accused Momade of being passive and not addressing the irregularities in the municipal elections and the concerns of demobilized guerrilla members (AIM News) (MedAfrica Times).
Despite this opposition, Momade remains confident in his leadership and the party’s support, emphasizing RENAMO’s role in defending democracy and claiming success in various local elections under his tenure (AIM News) (Voice of America). The upcoming congress will be a critical moment for RENAMO, as it will not only determine the party leadership but also its strategic direction ahead of the general elections scheduled for October 9, 2024 (MedAfrica Times).
