Storm Kills At Least Four People In Houston And Causes Damage

At least four people have died in Houston, in the south-east of Texas in the United States, following the strong storm that has hit the state in recent days, especially on Thursday night. Falling trees and a crane that was shaken by the strong winds are said to be the causes of the deaths.

According to the Associated Press news agency, the heavy rains caused serious damage, especially in the downtown area. The windows of some buildings burst, several trees fell and more than 900,000 homes and businesses were left without power.

“Stay at home tonight. Don’t go to work tomorrow, unless you’re an essential worker. Stay home, take care of your children,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire on Thursday night.

Wind gusts reached speeds of 160 kilometers per hour, said the mayor, predicting: “Downtown [Houston] is miserable”.

As a result of the storm, classes in the Houston school district were canceled on Friday, affecting some 400,000 students, and the city’s two main airports even temporarily suspended the entry and exit of planes.
