Woman Rescued After Working for 46 Years Without Pay in Rio De Janeiro

A 59-year-old woman was rescued in early July from a situation of slavery in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The victim had worked for the same family for 46 years without days off and without receiving a salary.

The case was only disclosed this Wednesday after all rescue procedures – carried out by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) in Rio de Janeiro in conjunction with the Federal Police – were completed, revealed G1.

From what was possible to ascertain, the woman did not receive wages and did not take time off, remaining at the disposal of the family for which she worked uninterruptedly. She had no bank account, no friends or family nearby who could help her.

“She had no financial autonomy, no access to salary or income, nor personal autonomy, living permanently in a situation of subjection to the family she worked for,” said prosecutor Thiago Gurjão, speaking to the Brazilian portal.

However, the MPT recognized the employment relationship, the payment of salaries and compensation for moral damages to the employee, whose agreement totaled 768 thousand reais (more than 125 thousand euros).

The amount will allow the victim to return to her homeland, Pernambuco. However, before that, the woman wanted to fulfill her dream of meeting Christ the Redeemer.
