Renamo Leader Threatens to Use ‘Force’ After Leader’s House Destroyed

The leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), and presidential candidate in the October general elections, denounced an alleged episode of political intolerance in the destruction of the house of a leader of the largest opposition party, threatening to ‘use force’.

“Do not force us to use force to respond,” warned Ossufo Momade, denouncing that the residence of the Renamo political delegate in the Tsangano district (Tete province, central Mozambique), Bernardo Mário, “was robbed and burned by as yet unidentified individuals.”

“But we have no doubt that they belong to some political opponent who we suspect is from the ruling party. In fact, this is the second time this has happened to the same delegate, every time there is a national delegation going to work in the town of Chinvalo,” accused Momade, in a message he posted on his Facebook account.

“We want to express our repudiation and displeasure by appealing to those responsible to find and hold the offenders accountable. We cannot continue to coexist with and normalize this type of repugnant and condemnable action in every sense. When we arrived in the district of Angonia, we received reports of an attempted assassination of our staff, in the town of Mpandula,” he added.

For Ossufo Momade, one of the four candidates running for President of the Republic in the general elections of October 9 in Mozambique, these actions “constitute a major violation of democratic principles”.

“The Constitution of the Republic grants freedom of choice and affiliation to any political ideology, we are exercising our constitutional rights. Stop the persecution, this country belongs to Mozambicans and never to a group of people.

“To our delegate, we offer our encouragement and solidarity. We will support you in whatever way we can to rebuild your home”, he concluded.

Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including presidential, legislative and provincial elections.

The current President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, will not run in the election, as he has already reached the constitutional limit of two terms.

In addition to Ossufo Momade, with the support of Renamo, Daniel Chapo, supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, in power), Lutero Simango, supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third parliamentary force, and Venâncio Mondlane, are running for office.
