The Fox News station sent invitations on Wednesday to the campaigns of Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump to hold a debate on September 17, in view of the November presidential elections in the United States.
According to news site Politico, the conservative station has sent out invitations to both campaigns to participate in the debate, which is tentatively scheduled to take place just a week after a proposed September 10th debate by ABC News, in which both President Joe Biden and Trump committed to participating, before the Democrat withdrew from the race.
Fox News proposes to hold the debate in Pennsylvania, but left the door open for discussions with each campaign about the date, format, location and whether or not there will be an audience, Politico further detailed.
The invitation comes after Trump pushed on Tuesday for the conservative station to host a debate, although he committed to debating Harris regardless of the host network.
The Harris and Trump campaigns did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the invitation, the news portal added.
The letters sent to the Harris and Trump campaigns were written by Fox News Media President Jay Wallace and Vice President of Policy Jessica Loker.
The television station described his invitation as a change to its debate proposal during the 2024 campaign and suggested that hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum would be the “best choices” to moderate.
A televised debate between Harris and Trump will attract attention after Biden’s disastrous performance in his June debate against Trump sparked a Democratic uprising against his campaign that culminated in the President’s surprise withdrawal from the campaign on Sunday.
Biden stated that he was doing it for the country and the party, and announced that he will address the nation this week to explain what happened.
Joe Biden chose Kamala Harris as his successor, who on Monday already achieved the support of enough delegates to guarantee the nomination at the next Democratic national convention, which starts on August 19, in Chicago.
