A group dedicated to consumer protection in Brazil, the Instituto Defesa Coletiva, decided to file two lawsuits against Meta, TikTok and Kwai, a Chinese short video platform.
Reuters states that the process is based on multiple studies that point to the harmful results of the use of social networks, with the aim of forcing these technologies to post clear warnings regarding the risks of addiction and impact on the mental health of young people.
“It is urgent that measures be adopted that change the way the algorithm works, the processing of data from users under 18 and the way teenagers aged 13 and over are supervised and their accounts created, in order to guarantee a safer, healthier experience… As already happens in developed countries”, says one of the lawyers associated with the processes, Lillian Salgado.
The group in question intends to sue the three technology companies for an amount equivalent to 480 million euros.
