North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement today that it had detected South Korean drones in Pyongyang’s night skies on October 3 and on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
The ministry accused the South of violating North Korea’s “sacred” sovereignty and threatening its security, saying that its army will prepare “all means of attack” and respond without warning if South Korean drones are detected on its territory again.
“The safety protection of our trigger has been released,” said the ministry.
“We will be prepared for anything and we will be vigilant. Criminals must no longer play with the lives of their citizens,” it warned.
Tensions between the Koreas have been rising in recent months, as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s weapons tests and threats have intensified, as well as the increase in joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.
Since May, North Korea has launched thousands of balloons filled with paper, plastic and other waste over the South, in a campaign of psychological warfare that has aggravated the animosity between the nations.
On Wednesday, Pyongyang said that the permanent blockade of its border with Seoul and the construction of front-line defense structures are intended to counter the “confrontational hysteria” of South Korean and US forces.
The North Korean military will also “completely cut off roads and railways” connected to South Korea and “fortify relevant areas on our side with strong defense structures,” the authorities said in a statement released by state media.
North Korea described these measures as “self-defense to inhibit war and defend the security” of the country and accused its rivals of “becoming increasingly reckless in their hysteria for confrontation,” citing the various military exercises in South Korea, the deployment of US strategic assets and the harsh rhetoric of its rivals.
