Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today congratulated US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on his “impressive victory” in the elections and expressed the hope of working with him for peace.
“I appreciate Trump’s commitment to the principle of ‘peace through strength’ in international affairs (…) I hope we can put this into action together,” the Ukrainian leader said in a message posted on the X social network. Donald Trump, 78, has already claimed victory in Tuesday’s elections, although the final results have yet to be confirmed.

Zelensky recalled “the long conversation” he had with Trump in New York in September, when the two spoke personally for the first time since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, about bilateral relations, Zelensky’s so-called Victory Plan and possible paths to peace.
The Ukrainian leader also said he hoped the election results would bring “an era of a strong America under the determination of Trump’s leadership”.
“We count on the continued support of both parties (Republican and Democratic) for Ukraine,” Zelensky added.
The Ukrainian president also said that his government would seek to “develop political and economic cooperation that benefits both the US and Ukraine”.
“As one of Europe’s great military powers, Ukraine is committed to ensuring lasting peace and security in Europe and the transatlantic community with the support of allies,” Zelensky wrote.
The Ukrainian president ended his message by expressing his wish to congratulate Trump “personally”.
