Influencer Pan Xiaoting, 24, died on July 14 in China after “eating too much” in a live broadcast on social media. The content creator was known for the practice of “mukbang”, in which presenters consume large amounts of food in front of a live audience.
According to the local portal Hankyung, the autopsy of the body revealed that the “abdomen was severely deformed and the stomach was full of undigested food”. Pan was known for doing challenges where she ate for 10 hours straight.
The influencer had previously been hospitalized due to stomach bleeding caused by excessive eating. However, she started binge eating again the day after being discharged.
The Chinese portal Creaders revealed that Pan ate 10 kg per meal and despite warnings from her family she decided to continue with the challenges.
The Chinese website reports that Pan was working as a waitress when she saw a colleague named Liu Qi make a lot of money doing mukbang. It was then that she decided to join the practice.
Initially, the influencer ate alone in front of the camera with few spectators. However, it gained popularity over time and attracted many viewers.
The young girl’s parents even warned her. “You really can’t do this anymore. No matter how much money you make, what’s the point? Do you know how much? harm your body?”, they told their daughter. In response, Pan would have smiled and replied: “Don’t worry, I can bear that risk.”
