Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the company responsible for building and selling the luxury yacht that sank in Sicily, Italy, with 22 people on board, six of whom died and one of whom is still missing, said in an interview with Sky News that the vessel ‘had no faults’ and was ‘unsinkable’.
According to the company’s CEO, these boats ‘are the safest in the most absolute sense’.
‘Being the manufacturer of Perini boats, I know very well how they have always been designed and built,‘ said Giovanni Costantino, adding that “sailing boats are known to be among the safest boats of all”, since their “structures and keels make them ”unsinkable bodies’’.
The news of the sinking of the yacht belonging to British tycoon Mike Lynch, who was acquitted of several fraud offences earlier this year, has therefore left him ‘saddened on the one hand, incredulous on the other’.
‘This incident seems like an unbelievable story, even technically,’ he said.
The shipwreck is being investigated by the Italian authorities.
According to preliminary reports, the ship sank when it was hit by a violent storm off Sicily, Italy.
Of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued alive. Six others were found dead and one is still missing.
