United Refuses to Wear LGBTQIA+ Supportive Jacket. Decision Is Giving Us Something To Talk About

Part of the Manchester United squad refused to wear an Adidas jacket created in support of the LGBTQ+ community and which was to be worn at the entrance to the pitch for next Sunday’s Premier League match against Everton, according to information published this Wednesday by The Athletic.

The initiative, part of the Rainbow Laces period (which has been going on for two seasons and in which English league teams are invited to support the community in question), caused discomfort for Noussair Mazraoui, who, citing the fact that he is Muslim, explained that he didn’t feel prepared to wear the jacket in question.

Athletic, however, claim that not all the players supported the decision and that those who did so wanted to avoid the Moroccan international being the only player to appear without the jacket.

Adidas was not satisfied with the position taken and, questioned by the same source, chose not to comment on the issue.

It’s worth remembering that, despite the controversy, Manchester United has carried out various initiatives to support LGBTQ+ people in recent years, and even created the Rainbow Devils supporters’ group in 2019.
