Two Palestinian prisoners, Muhamad Huwaishel Idris, 35, and Muath Jaled Rayyan, 31, both detained in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing war, have died in Israeli prisons, Palestinian institutions have confirmed.
“The revelation of more martyrs among the detainees in Gaza has increased in recent weeks, which means that the occupation continues with systematic crimes of torture, medical neglect, inaction, rape and sexual assault, abuse and torture,” said a joint statement from the Palestinian Authority’s Prisoners’ Affairs Committee and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club and Addameer, an association that provides legal assistance to detainees.
According to these institutions, cited by Efe, the Israeli authorities reported the death of Idris in the Israeli prison of Ofer, in the occupied West Bank, last Friday.
Rayyan died on 2 November, and this information was received in response to a letter from these organizations asking about his whereabouts. The Israeli authorities have not indicated in which prison or detention centre he died.
In both cases the causes and circumstances of death are unknown, with Idris’ family stating that he had not suffered from any health problems after his disappearance on 25 August.
Rayyan, who was arrested on 21 October, was suffering from paralysis.
With these two cases, there are now 47 confirmed Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons, many victims of torture, since 7 October, when the war in the Gaza Strip began following the Hamas attack.
