Former US President Donald Trump, a Republican, is narrowly leading Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris among early voters in key states, according to new polls released by US media.
In the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris poll, 48% of early voters in key states said they would vote for Trump, while 47% said they would vote for Harris, while 5% of respondents said they would choose someone else or not vote yet, the Miami Herald reported.
“We’re seeing a basically equal distribution of mail-in votes by party in key states,” Mark Penn, president of The Harris Poll, told The Hill.
Penn called it a “serious shift.” By comparison, in the 2020 election, about 60% of Democrats and 32% of Republicans voted by mail nationwide, according to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
For Mark Penn, Trump’s presence in some swing states, including his large rallies, has paid off.
The election will be close in some battleground states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, where polls show Harris and Trump neck and neck.
Harris, on the other hand, outperformed Trump by a significantly larger margin among early voters nationwide, with 51.4 percent saying they voted for Harris and 42.6 percent saying they chose Trump. Six percent said they chose another candidate or had not yet voted.
The poll, conducted between Oct. 11 and 13, sampled 3,145 registered voters and has a margin of error of 1.8 percentage points.
The poll also found that more Democrats nationwide plan to vote early than Republicans, the Miami Herald reported.
Forty-nine percent of Democrats said they plan to vote early, while the same share said they plan to vote on Election Day. By comparison, 42 percent of Republicans said they plan to vote early — marking a 7-point lead over Democrats — while 55 percent said they plan to vote on Election Day.
Forty-five percent of independents said they plan to vote on Election Day, and 44 percent said they plan to vote early.
In addition, 91 percent of Democrats who said they plan to vote early said they support Harris, while 90 percent of Republicans who said they plan to vote early said they support Trump.
Among independents who said they plan to vote early, 46 percent said they plan to vote for Harris and 43 percent said they plan to vote for Trump.
