Train Accident In Russia Causes Three Deaths And Dozens Of Injuries

A 14-car train derailed on Wednesday night in the republic of Komi, according to a statement from the state railway company Russian Railways, quoted by the US news agency AP.

Nine of the carriages came off the tracks and around four dozen people were injured, 10 of whom had to be hospitalized, state news agencies reported.

The body of the third victim, a 16-year-old girl, was found this afternoon (local time), according to the Investigative Committee, Russia’s main agency for investigating possible criminal cases.

The train was carrying 232 passengers.

The railway company admitted that the derailment may have resulted from part of the tracks being destroyed by heavy rainfall in the region.

It was not clear from Russian Railways’ information whether there was negligence on the part of the train’s crew.

The train was heading to the southern city of Novorossiysk from Vorkuta, a coal mining town in northern Komi.

The railway company has promised to pay two million rubles (around 20,000 euros) to each family of the dead, in addition to a slightly higher amount they will receive from insurance.

Each of the hospitalized injured will receive one million rubles (around 10,000 euros).
