‘A good son returns home’ is the popular saying that best fits André Villas-Boas’ return to Futebol Clube do Porto. Villas-Boas was coach of the Blue and Whites in the 2010/2011 season and won four competitions, which served as his launching pad as a coach to other international fields.
FC Porto was followed by the British club Chelsea in 2011/2012, where he reportedly amassed around 14 million euros, even though there are rumors that the then coach refused a large compensation when he left the English club, according to the Daily Mail. At this club, the current FC Porto president won his first Champions League and the FA Cup.
In 2012/2013, after leaving Chelsea, André Villas-Boas began coaching Tottenham, a club that earned him around 4.6 million euros, according to the same publication.
The English team was followed by Russia’s Zenit, where he was in charge from 2014 to 2016. There, the coach won a championship, the Russian Cup and a Super Cup. André Villas-Boas was paid 8.7 million euros a year.
Later, in 2016/2017, Pinto da Costa’s successor coached Shanghai SIPG, where he received his highest salary: 12 million euros a year. However, the level of corruption at the Chinese club made him leave.
Finally, the former coach was at French club Olympique De Marseille from 2019 to 2021, where he earned 7.4 million euros a year.
This international career allowed André Villas-Boas, who was one of the highest paid coaches in the world, to amass a million-dollar fortune, the exact amount of which is unknown. For the former coach, however, money is no object, which has led him to invest more than 500,000 euros in his campaign, as he recently confirmed to ‘Sábado’ magazine.
This investment was not in vain and earned André Villas-Boas the position of president of FC Porto – beating Pinto da Costa, who had been in this position for the last 42 years – with 80.2% of the vote.
Unlike Pinto da Costa, who as chairman of FC Porto’s board received a total of 1.15 million euros, according to ‘Record’, André Villas-Boas does not want to receive a salary in this position.
“I think I am and we are here to serve FC Porto, within this candidacy there are also a number of people, of those I have chosen, who make a financial effort to come to FC Porto, suffering cuts in their remuneration and accepting to serve FC Porto. I think that the president, in this case, has to be the maximum reflection of this effort, also changing the paradigm,” revealed the now president of the blue and whites, justifying to ‘Jogo’ why he doesn’t want to receive a salary.
