Three activists threw red paint on statues of American presidents at the San Juan Capitol on Tuesday in response to recent insults against Puerto Rico during a rally for former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump.
“It is an act of expression by the Puerto Rican people in the face of the policy of hate that is being led by the Republican Party led by Donald Trump”, highlighted Tito Román, one of the activists, after launching the painting and before being arrested.
This action came after American comedian Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage” at a rally for Republican candidate Donald Trump.
These statues, installed on the Promenade of Presidents, on Constitution Avenue, in the San Juan Capitol, are monuments erected to North American presidents who visited the Caribbean island on official occasions.
Also the rapper Bad Bunny, in a show of pride and resistance, paid tribute to his home island with a video posted on Tuesday morning about the natural and architectural riches of Puerto Rico and its international legends in areas such as politics, sports or music.
Puerto Rico’s political class condemned comedian Hinchcliffe’s words and numerous renowned artists repudiated the insults, in some cases calling for votes for the vice president and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris.
“Garbage was what came out of TonyHinchcliffe’s mouth, and all those who applauded him should feel ashamed for disrespecting Puerto Rico,” said the governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, through his account on the social network X.
Hinchcliffe was due to travel to Puerto Rico this week and perform at Gala, one of San Juan’s main tourist centers, and Norbertos Piano Bar & Lounge, in the exclusive Palmas del Mar area of Humacao (east), but the heads of both venues canceled events.
The inhabitants of Puerto Rico, a community in the United States, cannot vote between Trump and Harris in the November 5 elections, but the millions of Puerto Ricans living in the United States participate in these elections.
