In the next round, the 33rd, the ‘lions’ travel to Estoril Praia on Saturday with the title already secured, but they won’t be presented with the trophy until the following weekend, May 18 and 19, at home, when they host the current 17th and penultimate-placed team in the league.
This is the usual protocol, as the trophy is awarded to the winning team in the first home game after the title has been confirmed.
Sporting became Portuguese soccer champions for the 20th time on Sunday, benefiting from Benfica’s 2-0 defeat at Famalicão in the 32nd round of the I Liga.
The ‘lions’, who had beaten Portimonense 3-0 at home on Saturday, now have an eight-point lead over their Lisbon rivals, with only six points still up for grabs.
