Spanish Government Rejects Argentine President’s Criticism of Sánchez

“The Spanish government categorically rejects the unfounded terms of the statement published by the presidency of the Argentine Republic, which do not correspond to the relations of the two countries and their brotherly peoples,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation said in a statement.

The position was taken after the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, criticized the leader of the Spanish government, saying that Pedro Sánchez has “more important problems” to deal with, in response to the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, who on Friday suggested that the Argentine leader took drugs.

“I saw Milei on television, (…) I don’t know if it was before or after taking substances. (…) I said: ‘It’s impossible for him to win the elections’,” Puente said at a conference organized by the PSOE.

Today, the ministry led by José Manuel Albares assured that the Spanish government and people continue to “maintain and strengthen fraternal ties” and relations of friendship and collaboration with the Argentine people, a “will shared by the whole of Spanish society”, in response to the Argentine President’s statement.

“Pedro Sánchez’s government has more important problems to worry about, such as the accusations of corruption against his wife, a matter which has even led him to consider resigning,” said Milei in a statement published on the X social network.

The Argentine President hopes that justice will act “swiftly” in this case, which he said “affects the stability” of Spain and relations between the two countries.

He also accused Pedro Sánchez of “endangering” the unity of Spain by “pacting with separatists” and “allowing illegal immigration by those who attack his physical integrity” and the middle class through “socialist policies that only bring poverty and death”.

Javier Milei will travel to Spain in two weeks’ time, where he will take part in an event organized by the far-right opposition party Vox, which will take place on 18 and 19 May.
