A Russian court sentenced Ksenia Khavana, a woman with US and Russian citizenship, to 12 years in prison for treason for allegedly raising money for the Ukrainian military.
Khavana, whom the Russian authorities identify by her maiden name, Karelina, was arrested in Yekaterinburg in February and pleaded guilty at her closed trial last week, according to press reports.
The 33-year-old woman obtained US citizenship after marrying an American and moving to Los Angeles. She had returned to Russia to visit her family.
Russia’s Federal Security Service said that the convicted woman ‘proactively collected money in the interests of one of the Ukrainian organisations, which was subsequently used to buy tactical medical supplies, equipment, weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainian armed forces’.
According to EFE, the public prosecutor’s office had previously requested 15 years in prison for Khavana for allegedly sending 51.8 dollars (47 euros) to Ukrainian troops so that they could confront the Russian invasion.
