Power Outage Leaves Zimbabwe Parliament In Darkness After Speech

The lights flickered and then went out. Opposition MPs shouted that the power outage was the perfect metaphor for the country’s plight.

A power outage left Zimbabwe’s parliament in darkness on Friday as Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube was finishing his budget speech.

The power outage is due to the ongoing crisis facing the country, with daily blackouts lasting up to 12 hours, caused by a prolonged drought that is affecting power generation at the Kariba Dam, the country’s main source of power.

As the lights went out, opposition MPs shouted that the power outage was the perfect metaphor for the country’s plight.

However, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority spokesman George Manyaya assured local news site ZimLive that the blackout was unplanned, explaining that parliament has its own power source that is exempt from blackouts.

It was later learned that the blackout was caused by a lightning strike.
