Pope Francis said at an internal Church meeting last Monday (20) that “there is already too much faggotry” in seminaries when he asked Italian bishops not to accept openly gay priests, according to the Italian press. The Pope’s speech made headlines in several Italian and Argentinian media this Monday (27).
According to the newspapers “La Repubblica” and “Corriere della Sera”, in a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops, the Pope used the word “frociaggine”, a vulgar Italian term that can be roughly translated as “faggotry” or “faggotry”.
The term is highly derogatory towards the LGBT community and its use would have surprised the more than 200 people present, according to the Italian news agency Ansa.
“La Repubblica” attributed its story to several unspecified sources, while “Corriere della Sera” broke the news backed by some unidentified bishops, who suggested that Francis, being Argentinian, might not have realized that the Italian term used was offensive.
