Nobel Prize in Medicine goes to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun

The 2024 Nobel Prize season kicked off today with the announcement of the prize in the field of Medicine. The winners were Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun.

The laureates were distinguished for the discovery of microRNA and its role in the post-transcriptional regulation of genes.

According to the Nobel Assembly, the discovery by the two American researchers – of a fundamental principle that governs the regulation of gene activity – “is proving to be of fundamental importance for the way organisms develop and function”.

The awards will continue until the 14th, when the award for Economics will be announced.
The winners of the awards for Physics (Tuesday), Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday) and Peace (Friday) will be announced throughout the week.
All categories will be announced in Sweden (in Solna and Stockholm), except for the Nobel Peace Prize, which, as usual, will be awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and will be held at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.
The winners of this year’s Nobel Prize will receive 11 million Swedish kronor (around 968 thousand euros, at the current exchange rate). The award can be given to a maximum of three laureates who share the prize money.
