The baby still had part of the placenta and umbilical cord and had been in that location for about a day. Spanish authorities have not yet located the mother.
The body of a newborn baby was found, during Friday afternoon, by passers-by, on the bank of the Arlanzón River, in Burgos, Spain. The baby still had part of the placenta and umbilical cord and had been in that location for about a day.
According to the Spanish newspaper ABC, it was “some young people” who raised the alarm when they were walking their dogs. The baby was in an area of the river that is not visible from the park where the Arlanzón River passes, but the dogs found the body and began to sniff it, which caused the owners to approach.
The young women alerted the Local Police, who said it could be a doll. However, when they arrived at the scene, the agents confirmed that it was a baby and alerted the National Police.
To ABC, Jesús Nogales, commissioner of the National Police in Burgos, stated that the investigation is still in a “very preliminary” phase and that the result of the autopsy will be decisive in determining whether the baby was born from a “full-term pregnancy” or whether it is of a stillbirth. At issue may be a crime against human rights or a homicide, depending on the outcome of the autopsy.
As of Thursday, the baby’s mother had not yet been located.
