Mozambique has 23 million dollars (21 million euros) to develop economic and social projects in the provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa, in the north of the country, the Northern Integrated Development Agency (ADIN) said today.
“We have a lot of projects financed by different organizations, [among which] the World Bank and the UNDP [United Nations Development Program]. All of these projects are currently being coordinated by ADIN (…), there are 23 million of dollars that are currently being projected only for the northern zone”, the president of ADIN, Jacinto Loureiro, told the media during the laying of the first stone for the construction of the agency’s office in Nampula.
According to the official, the projects to be developed in the north of Mozambique aim to “solve the population’s problems”, mainly the victims of armed attacks, carried out in Cabo Delgado by insurgent groups since 2017.
ADIN was officially launched on August 31, 2020 by the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, to reduce serious regional asymmetries by promoting the development of the provinces of Niassa, Cabo Delgado and Nampula.
More recent data indicate that the three provinces have the highest poverty rates, with Niassa at 67%, Nampula at 65% and Cabo Delgado at 53%, compared to the national average of 43%.
