Moscow Says General Kirillov Was Target of Kyiv Terrorist Act

The Russian presidency today accused Kyiv of an “act of terrorism”, referring to the assassination of General Igor Kirillov in Moscow, 24 hours after the attack for which Ukraine claimed responsibility.

“It’s obvious who ordered this act of terrorism. This demonstrates once again that the Kyiv regime does not back down from terrorist methods,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian security services (SBU) claimed responsibility for the assassination in Moscow of the Russian general responsible for nuclear, biological and chemical defense.

“The bomb attack [today] against Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, commander of the nuclear, biological and chemical defense troops of the Russian Armed Forces, was a special SBU operation,” the Kyiv source told Agence France Presse.

In October, the British authorities named General Kirillov as the person responsible in Moscow for the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.

He is the highest-ranking Russian military officer to have died in Moscow since the start of Russia’s offensive against Ukrainian territory in February 2022.

The high-ranking Russian army officer died in an explosion near a residential building in south-eastern Moscow, the Russian Investigative Committee initially announced.
