The Ukrainian Army General Staff today estimated that Russia has lost more than 600,000 soldiers, killed and wounded, since the invasion of Ukraine began almost two and a half years ago.
Estimated casualties among Russian forces in Ukraine have risen to 600,470 after some 1,120 of its soldiers were killed or wounded in combat on Sunday, according to data from the General Staff in its latest report.
Monthly losses of Russian troops rose sharply, by more than 44 percent, after the start of its offensive in the Kharkiv region in May, reaching nearly 39,000 that month.
Casualties declined slightly in subsequent months but have remained at higher levels — above 35,000 in June and July — as Russia continued to commit to infantry attacks during its offensive in the east and south of the country.
In August, Russia’s daily losses have so far been between 1,000 and 1,200 soldiers, according to Ukrainian estimates, which say Moscow continues to pay a heavy price for its advances in parts of the front line in the eastern Donetsk region.
According to Kyiv, Russia has also lost more than 8,500 tanks, almost 16,500 armored combat vehicles, 17,000 artillery systems and almost 700 aircraft and helicopters since the beginning of the invasion.
According to the latest estimates by Ukrainian military analysts, Russia has maintained the size of its forces in Ukraine at between 510,000 and 520,000 troops, due to its ability to find enough recruits to cover its losses. The situation may have changed after the start of the Ukrainian offensive on Kursk in the south of the Russian Federation in early August, according to reports of the transfer of some units to the attacked region.
