Tamara Banks mixed the drink with formula milk in the baby’s bottle. Coroners revealed in court that the child had almost all her teeth rotten from the sugar.
A 41-year-old American woman has been sentenced to almost a decade in prison in Ohio for causing the death of her four-year-old diabetic daughter by feeding her soft drinks.
According to US newspapers, Tamara Banks started giving her daughter, Karmity Hoeb, soft drinks when she was still a baby. In a bottle, she mixed formula milk with Mountain Dew, a fizzy citrus drink from PepsiCo.
When she died in January 2022, almost all her teeth were rotten. She had never been to the dentist and, despite suffering from diabetes, her parents didn’t take her to her appointments.
Karmity was found unconscious by her father, Christopher Hoeb, 53, who called the emergency medical number when he realized his daughter was unwell. The girl was still transported to hospital, but was already brain dead. The machines that connected her to life were turned off shortly afterwards.
During the autopsy, coroners discovered that she had died from consuming too much sugar.
The parents were arrested and charged with the crime of negligent homicide. Both eventually pleaded guilty.
Last Friday, Tamara was sentenced to nine years in prison. Christopher will be sentenced on June 11th.
