Iran Meets With China, Russia for Nuclear Program Talks

In a statement, the Iranian government revealed that the meetings will take place with deputy foreign ministers.

“[The deputy ministers] will focus on recent developments related to the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions [imposed on Iran],” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai.

In 2015, Iran reached an agreement with the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, China and Russia to regulate its nuclear program.

Tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, which the West suspects has military objectives despite Iranian denials, have increased during President Donald Trump’s term.

During his first term, the US president withdrew his country from the 2015 agreement that offered Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbing its nuclear ambitions.

In retaliation for this unilateral withdrawal, Iran, in turn, reneged on its commitments and pressed ahead with its nuclear program.

In recent years, all attempts to revive the agreement have failed.

The text is valid until October 2025 and some countries do not rule out the possibility of reimposing sanctions on Iran after that date.

According to the UN nuclear watchdog, Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state to enrich uranium to a high level (60%), and continues to accumulate large reserves of fissile material.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) defines a threshold of 90% as sufficient to produce an atomic weapon.

On February 8, Iran said it was ready to negotiate with the United States to lift sanctions, but rejected a policy of “maximum pressure”, declared Abbas Araghchi, the head of Iranian diplomacy.
