Evo Morales Threatens to Block Roads If He Is Detained to Testify

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales threatened today to block the country’s roads if he is detained to give statements in an alleged case involving human trafficking and the rape of a minor.

“We have to mobilize,” Morales urged while speaking to supporters in the city of Sacaba, at an event commemorating Decolonization Day.

The appeal comes after leaders of social organizations that defend Morales threatened to block the roads nationwide if an arrest warrant is issued for the former president.

“The Pact of Unity and other social organizations are not wrong in going on a major mobilization. In order to respect us, the government has the obligation to respect the Bolivian people,” said Evo Morales.

According to a complaint that reached the Bolivian Public Prosecutor’s Office, the former president is alleged to have committed the crimes of human trafficking and the rape of a minor, with whom he is alleged to have had a child.

Morales was scheduled to testify on Friday before the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Tarija, the city where the alleged crimes took place, but he did not appear and the defense presented a legal justification.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that it would issue an arrest warrant against Morales to compel him to testify, but has not yet executed the order.
