The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said today that Europe is ready to help Spain deal with the extremely serious floods, with catastrophic consequences recorded in the south and east of the country.
“Europe is ready to help”, said Metsola in a message in Spanish on the social network X, expressing her solidarity with the population of the south and east of Spain, who “are facing very serious floods, which are having catastrophic consequences”.
Metsola also thanked “the rescuers who are doing everything they can to help people in difficulty”.
At least 13 people have died in Valencia and six are missing in Albacete, according to the first report from the passage of a violent storm that is hitting the south and east of the Iberian Peninsula.
Dozens of people were trapped by the water in different parts of the province of Valencia, including in shopping centres, vehicles, roofs or trees, according to residents of different locations.
Rainfall in the Valencia region was the highest in 24 hours since September 11, 1966, according to official figures.
The Spanish government has set up a crisis committee to monitor the effects of the storm on the Mediterranean coast and in Albacete, while King Felipe VI said he was following “with great concern the devastating consequences” of the floods.
The Spanish meteorological service is forecasting more showers and very strong storms until Thursday and has not ruled out the possibility of torrential rain, accompanied by hail and strong winds this morning.
