Escaped Zebra in Washington Recaptured… Almost a Week Later

It took almost a week for the authorities to recapture an escaped zebra in North Bend, near Seattle, in the US state of Washington.

Shug, as she is known, had been on the run since she and three other zebras managed to escape from a trailer in the last week of April. The animal was rounded up by local residents and animal control officers in the town of Riverbend on Friday night.

“The last of the four zebras that had been on the run for nearly six days has been safely captured,” reported King County Regional Animal Services.

“The zebra appeared to be in good condition despite its nearly week-long adventure in the woods,” it added.

It should be noted that Shug and three other zebras were being driven from Washington state to Montana on April 28 when they managed to get loose after the driver of the vehicle stopped near North Bend. The other three animals were quickly captured, but Shug jumped a fence and disappeared.

Since then, the zebra has been seen on roads and tracks, capturing the public’s attention, but also increasing fears that it could be run over or attacked by another animal.

Workers from King County Regional Animal Services set up feeding areas to help persuade the animal and it was eventually captured.

To The Seattle Times, the owner of the animals revealed that she had bought the zebras in Lewis County, Washington, and was taking them to a zoo she runs near Anaconda, in southwest Montana, where Shug will now go.
