Daniel Chapo Is FRELIMO’s Candidate In Mozambique’s Presidential Elections

After three long days, between advances and setbacks, the FRELIMO Party has finally chosen its presidential candidate for the October 9 General Elections, who goes by the name of DANIEL CHAPO, the current Governor of Inhambane Province.

Daniel Chapo was an unlikely face until the start of the Extraordinary Session on Friday, and was not even among those who publicly expressed an interest in running internally to succeed Filipe Nyusi, having been proposed by the Political Commission on the first day of the Extraordinary Session.

Who is Daniel Chapo?

The 47-year-old Daniel Francisco Chapo, whose full name he bears, was born in Inhaminga, Sofala Province, on January 6, 1977. He is a lawyer by profession, with a degree in Law from the Faculty of Law at Eduardo Mondlane University in 2000, and a Master’s degree in Development Management from the Catholic University of Mozambique, obtained in 2014. Administrator of the Palma District in Cabo Delegado Province, in March 2016 he was appointed Governor of Inhambane Province, a position he has held to date.

It should be noted that after seeing the voting process dragged into a second round with Daniel Chapo, Roque Silva resigned as Secretary General of FRELIMO and asked to no longer be a member of the party’s Political Commission.
