The captain of the Solong, the Portuguese-flagged cargo ship that collided with an oil tanker in the North Sea, is a Russian citizen.
According to Sky News, citing German shipping company Ernst Russ, the remaining crew members were Russian and Filipino nationals.
On Tuesday, the company announced that the ship’s captain had been arrested by British police, after it was revealed that a 59-year-old man was in custody on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.
One crew member went missing after the collision, which occurred on Monday morning, and authorities declared him dead the following day.
The US military-chartered tanker Stena Immaculate was anchored about 10 miles off the city of Hull, Yorkshire, on the east coast of the United Kingdom, when it was struck by the Portuguese-flagged container ship Solong. The reasons for the collision are not yet known.
On Tuesday, the owner of the Solong denied that the containers were carrying sodium cyanide, a highly toxic substance in contact with water that could lead to a major natural disaster.
The company responded to this possibility in a statement, explaining that the ship had on board “four empty containers”, confirming that they had previously transported sodium cyanide and ensuring that it would continue to monitor these containers.
