British Prime Minister Keir Starmer today congratulated Donald Trump on his “historic victory” in the US presidential election, expressing his desire to maintain the “special relationship” with the ally in the years to come.
“Congratulations, President-elect Trump, on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years to come,” reads a statement issued this morning.
“As your closest allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise. From growth and security to innovation and technology, I know that the special relationship between the UK and the US will continue to thrive on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come,” he said.
Trump proclaimed his victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential election in a speech from Florida in the early hours of this morning, as he awaits confirmation and officialization, when US media projections put him just three electoral votes away from reaching the 270 needed to return to the White House.
The two leaders dined together in September, during a visit by the head of government to New York, but in October the ruling Labor Party was accused of illegally interfering in the US presidential elections by sending activists to help Kamala Harris’ campaign.
A statement published on Trump’s website announced that an official complaint had been filed with the Federal Election Commission against the Labor Party and the Harris-Walz campaign for “illegal contributions to foreign campaigns and interference in our elections”.
Starmer shrugged it off and said that the mess would not damage the relationship he has tried to build with Trump.
“I spent some time in New York with President Trump, I had dinner with him, and my goal in doing so was to make sure that between the two of us we established a good relationship, which we did, and I was very grateful to him for making his time available,” he told reporters at the time.
