At least 14 people died today after an Indian-registered bus carrying 40 passengers fell into a river in Nepal, official Indian sources told EFE.
Anunaya Jha, magistrate of Maharajganj district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, confirmed the death toll and assured that investigation work is being carried out by Nepalese police stationed in the region.
The Indian authorities are also investigating the accident and trying to identify whether any of their citizens died or were injured in the accident.
The death toll is expected to rise in the coming hours.
The vehicle, registered in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, partially sank into the Masyangdi River in the Tanahun district of central Nepal.
At the time of the accident, the bus was travelling between the popular tourist destination of Pokhara and Kathmandu.
The precariousness of Nepal’s roads, the poor state of the vehicles, too many passengers and reckless driving are the most frequent causes of road accidents in the country, which has one of the highest accident mortality rates in the world.
In July, 71 people died when two buses were swept away by a landslide following heavy rains on a motorway south-west of Kathmandu.
