It was in the 90s that Monica Lewinsky, then just 24 years old, was catapulted into the spotlight of fame. At issue was an alleged sexual relationship between the secretary and then-US President Bill Clinton, who denied the relationship for years.
The young woman, who thought she was living a love story, quickly became involved in one of the biggest scandals in the world, and her name, by her own admission, ended up being tarnished forever.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stones magazine, the American says that she has finally managed to “achieve the stability” she needed.
“Today, at 51 years old, I think it would be crazy to have a relationship with someone who is 24 years old,” he admits, showing that his perception of the relationship he had with the former US president is completely different today. However, he also acknowledges: “I always knew it wasn’t sexual abuse, I wanted to be there”, he says, adding that he never realized the seriousness of what happened.
After the relationship was exposed, mistakes followed one after the other. Monica began to be requested to speak about the subject in various media outlets, and she never refused an invitation. “I thought if I spoke up, people would understand my side.” However, that’s not what happened, and Monica ended up being satirized every time she spoke. Suicide even crossed his mind.
This, however, changed in 2010, when a young American took his own life after a case of cyberbullying. “I thought to myself: even though I’m not thriving, at least I’m surviving.”
It was then that he released ‘Shame and Survival’ and became a symbol of resilience and survival of public humiliation. The ‘Me Too’ movement also came to make a difference. “The world had changed and there was now a new generation that had not been through the media brainwashing of the 90s,” he points out.
So, despite admitting that she still suffers from post-traumatic stress related to the scandal, she says she is doing her recovery work, and that today she feels secure about her past and the person she has become.
