Arrested for Planning “Violent Action” at the Passing of the Olympic Flame in France

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of planning a “violent action” during the passing of the Olympic flame in Bordeaux, France.

The suspect, who was a sympathizer of the ‘incel’ movement, known for its hatred of women, was arrested in Eysines, according to CNEWS.

The same media outlet said that the young man, who was remanded in custody after being brought to court on Wednesday, was planning a mass murder during the passing of the Olympic flame in Bordeaux, scheduled for this Thursday.

Alex G, who lives in Gironde, had no criminal record. During house searches, the authorities found a gun that fired rubber ammunition, as well as several cell phones and a computer.

The investigation began after the authorities detected a worrying message on May 17 that could be glorifying the attack carried out by Elliot Rodger who, on May 23, 2014, killed six people and injured 14 others, before ending his own life in Isla Vista, California. The 22-year-old was also a member of the ‘incel’ movement and had a deep aversion to women.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported the arrest of “an individual who was planning a violent action during the passing of the Olympic flame” and thanked the police and “all the agents of the Interior Ministry” for their work on the social network X (Twitter).

According to the Bordeaux court, the suspect admitted to “having considered an act without a specific location” and did not speak directly about the passing of the Olympic flame. Nevertheless, he was described as being “psychologically fragile”.
The authorities are investigating.
It should be remembered that the Olympic flame is at the start of a 12,000-kilometer odyssey through France and its overseas territories. The flame was supposed to travel as far as New Caledonia, but the riots of the last 10 days have led to its cancellation.
