Russian courts today sentenced American Robert Gilman, who was already serving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence in the Voronezh region (west), to almost seven years in prison,
Accused of assaulting his guards, Gilman, 30, was sentenced “to seven years and one month in a strict penal colony” by the Voronezh central court, the local prosecutor’s office said in a press release issued today.
It was established by the court that the American used “physical violence” against prison guards, inflicting multiple blows on an investigator, according to the same source.
Robert Gilman had already been sentenced in 2022 to four and a half years in prison for drunkenly assaulting a police officer in the city of Voronezh.
Following an appeal by the defense, his sentence was reduced to three and a half years in prison.
At the end of June, Gilman went to a retrial in which he pleaded guilty, but claimed that the guards had poisoned him with “radioactive materials” during his arrest.
In recent years, several Westerners, mainly Americans, have been arrested in Russia and subjected to serious accusations, with Washington accusing Moscow of taking hostages to obtain the release of Russians held abroad.
