The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced today that US forces carried out new strikes against positions of the Shiite Huthi rebels in Yemen.
The “precision strikes” were carried out against two “underground storage facilities for advanced conventional weapons (ACW) in territory controlled by the Huthis in Yemen,” CENTCOM said in a statement published on social media.
“The Huthis are using these facilities to conduct attacks against US Navy warships and merchant vessels in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden,” the same source said, ruling out the possibility of injuries or damage to US personnel and equipment.
“[The strikes] are part of efforts to diminish attempts by the Iran-backed Huthis to threaten regional partners and military and merchant vessels sailing in the region,” CENTCOM also stressed, which did not specify the results of the strikes.
The Houthis began attacking Israel and other targets in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in retaliation for the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian enclave controlled by Hamas, which has killed nearly 46,000 people since October 2023.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Hezbollah, Hamas and several extremist groups in the region are part of the so-called “axis of resistance” against Israel led by Iran.
In the face of the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, areas essential for world trade, the United States of America (USA), Israel’s closest ally, created a multinational force to protect shipping in this strategic area and launched the first strikes in Yemen in January 2024, with the help of the United Kingdom.
