Violent Clashes Erupt Near Milan Duomo as Protests Over Italy’s Rising Living Costs Intensify

The ‘Italia in Piazza’ march drew over 5,000 people on Saturday, escalating when young protesters threw stones and firecrackers, prompting police to use tear gas and water cannons.

Damage included burned barricades, smashed shop windows, looted stores, and injuries to dozens, with 40 to 50 arrests, many of minors; similar unrest hit Turin and Bologna.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, separating it from peaceful rights, while online views split between economic roots among suburban youth and claims of ideological or migrant motives. Milan’s mayor acknowledged frustrations but rejected any justification for the chaos near the iconic cathedral.
