Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-born man now 55, attacked a female passenger who fell asleep in his taxi, binding and assaulting her before she escaped at dawn. Weeks after the May 2011 incident, he obtained citizenship on October 19 without disclosing it, leading to his 2014 conviction for first-degree rape and kidnapping with a 20-year sentence. A federal court in New York’s Eastern District revoked his citizenship on August 26 for concealment during naturalization, requiring him to surrender his documents; after prison release in 2029, deportation proceedings may follow. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated it shows citizenship is no shield for criminals obtained through fraud.
