At an international airport in Sri Lanka , authorities detained twenty-two Buddhist monks after uncovering a large amount of restricted items hidden inside their luggage. Officials revealed that nearly 110 kilograms of these items were seized, with each individual allegedly carrying around five kilograms, carefully concealed in specially designed suitcase compartments.
The group had just returned from a four-day trip to Thailand . During further investigation, a 23rd monk was also taken into custody, believed to be the one coordinating the entire operation.
Authorities estimate the total value of the seized material at around $3.4 million , making it one of the biggest such cases ever recorded at the airport.
All individuals are currently in custody as officials continue their investigation . Efforts are underway to identify the wider network involved and understand the exact role played by each person in this highly organized operation.
