Future US President-elect Donald Trump has proposed Kash Patel as FBI director, seeking to make the agency a federal ally and to rid the government of alleged conspirators.
This is Trump’s latest test of how far Republican senators will go in confirming his nominees.
“I am proud to announce that Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel will be the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),” Trump announced Saturday night on the Truth Social network.
“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator and America First fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice and protecting the American people,” the president-elect said.
The nomination is in line with Trump’s vision that government agencies require radical transformation, after years of being the target of federal investigations that followed his first administration and later led to his indictment.
Patel “played a key role in exposing Russia, Russia, the Russia hoax, and positioning himself as a champion of truth, accountability and the Constitution,” Trump wrote on Saturday night.
It remains unclear whether Patel could be confirmed, even by a Republican-led Senate, though Trump has also raised the prospect of using recess appointments to enforce his choices.
